E.L.D. 1A focuses on oral skills for beginning level English Language Learners. This course helps students develop basic interpersonal communication skills. The course covers vocabulary, language patterns, structure and oral skills to help the student survive in American schools and society. This course is offered as a two-period block with ELD 1B.

E.L.D.1B emphasizes reading, writing, and literacy skills for the beginning level English Language Learners. Students learn how to put together words into sentences in oral and written form. E.L.D. 1B is designed to be print rich including dictated stories, listening to literature, choral and shared stories.

This course is designed for students who have some knowledge of English, including a limited knowledge of vocabulary, sentence structure, reading and writing. This course is for advanced learners of English as an additional language. Students read non-sheltered literature, various short stories and poetry. This course combines writing and public speaking to expand experiences with literature and prepare students for mainstream English classes.

Pre-requisites: Assessment.
This course fills an academic and primary language need for the beginning, Limited English Speaking student. Students will read literature in their native languages; selecting literature from oneีs own culture is one way of developing reading and writing skills which will later transfer to English. The instruction will be highly individualized and will depend on cooperative sharing by the class members, an assistance by students who share common native languages and speak English, and support from parents and the community. Authentic assessment will be the major component of evaluation with an emphasis on visuals and performance.

World Literature (Sheltered)

Pre-requisites: Assessment.
Using works of world literature, the student will explore themes of human experience and inquiry. The literature will include recognized classics from other countries, pieces of historical nature, and contemporary multicultural stories, novels, poetry, and plays. The course content will be closely linked to sophomore World History to allow the students to see the connections between the two disciplines. This literature-based program will provide instruction in and experiences for students to build their listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking skills.
