What is the difference between works cited list and a bibliography?
The Works Cited is a list of works that are cited in the paper (with
text notes!). This is for works that are directly quoted or
paraphrased. Any information in the paper that is not the author's
original ideas must be cited and the source belongs in the Works Cited
page. The purpose of text notes is to identify ideas that are not
original to the paper's author. The Works Cited page gives complete
publication information to allow the reader to find the original
source.
A bibliography is a list of works consulted and includes both works
cited and those used for background information that didn't make it
into the paper. (By Adam Weiss, librarian at Oceana HS)
