Dirty Mother and Children
(Destitute Pea Pickers in California...referred to as "Migrant Mother", 1936)

by Madonna Mendoza

This photo is of a woman, maybe in her 30's with three children next to her. The two children beside her have their faces turned back, embarrassed of others' opinions. The other child lays in her arm asleep not really knowing what is occurring due to the age of the child. The mother has one hand under her chin and a look of worry lingers on her face. She's in deep thought and also concerned about whether or not her husband will return with news that he's found work.

The family lives at a Hooverville camp similar to the one the Joads were at. Their clothes are worn so many times the dirt stains won't disappear. The clothes they wear are smudged with mud and the baby the mother holds has dirt spots all over its face. The family and camp is so poor; they rarely take baths.
