American Literature shows history-literature connections with the American dream as a theme. The Civil War (Killer Angels preserved the union for future generations. Immigrants (The Jungle) relied on physical strength to achieve their dream in the early 1900s. The 1920s flappers and bootleggers (The Great Gatsby) pursued non-traditional values, while the Great Depression encouraged Okies like the Joad family (The Grapes of Wrath) to follow the Migrant Road to California. The 1950s was a conformist era that persecuted Communists (The Crucible) and the l970s -80s witnessed the tragedy of the Vietnam War (In Country).
