  • Why did Arthur Miller choose to write a play about the Salem Witch Trials?
  • What connection is there between the events of the Salem Witch Craft Trials and the McCarthy Era, the time period in which Miller wrote his play? 
  • How do writers use literature as a means of creating social and political change?
  • What can we do as individuals to prevent situations like these from happening again?

READING

  • As you read The Crucible take notes on
    • The causes of the witch-hunt according to Miller, the author.
    • Who was involved and what were the motivations for the behaviors of the characters?
    • How long did it continue and why?
    • When/how/why did it finally end?
  • Use post-it notes to write your notes on. Place the post-its directly on the page where you have found your information so you can share the examples with members of your groups.
Meet with your group members when you complete the reading of the story. Use this Collating Chart (MS Word Doc)to record the information you gather during your discussion. You should print a copy for every member in your group so that all four of you will have the information.
