25th Anniversary Watermelon Run

The Silver Anniversary of Fremont’s Annual Watermelon Run began as a simple race to encourage Fremont students to join the cross country team has now grown into a community-wide event, not to be missed.

Race directors under the able guidance of Pat Lawson, PE teacher, decided to celebrate the significance of this event by dedicating this year’s race to 1970 Fremont graduate, Francie Larrieu Smith, a world class runner and Olympian.

The competition intensifies each year. Departments at Fremont were in a raging battle as well as competition from district personnel. The race began with the principal’s starting pistol and lively race music provided by the band. There were 284 competitors with the winner cruising in at 11:20.
