Newspaper!                         

Purpose:

Revolutions are not just history, they are still happening today.  The fights over political, social, economic, and religious issues are as timeless as the world itself.  When people are unhappy and find that they canÕt achieve change by working within the system, they turn to revolution to improve their society.   You and your team of top-notch reporters will be exposing one of these instances to the world Ðthe Philippines, China, South Africa, Poland, or El Salvador.  You will report on: Who, What, Where, When, and Why the Revolution happened.  You will also give your editorial opinion on whether the revolution improved society.

 

Roles:

 

Producer/Editor Ð Creates page layout.  Edits articles.  Writes ÒretrospectiveÓ explaining causes of revolution.

Journalist Ð Writes the front-page story that explains a key event, key players and other important information.

Columnists (2) Ð Write editorials that predict how revolution will impact society.  Give opposing opinions on impact.

Photographer  - Collects images for and writes captions.  Creates a slideshow.  Writes a short biography of key player.

 

Requirements/Expectations:

 

Each group will create a website that looks like a real internet newspaper.  It will include

*    Front Page article that explains a key event and the 5 Ws of the revolution

*    Supporting article that explain the causes of the revolution.

*    Short biography of an important person involved in the revolution.

*    Editorial articles that express opposing perspectives on whether the revolution improved society

*    Pictures and captions with each article and also a short video slideshow describing the revolution.

*    References to at least two concepts from Units 1 and 2

 

Steps to Take:

1. Read background information provided and identify the 5 Ws.  Consider the key players who could be interviewed.

2. Brainstorm research questions Ð What more do you want to know? ˆ Then producer/reporter use start research.

3. Discuss the Perspectives Ð What are arguments for and against the revolution improving society?

5. Write the articles. This is individual work that must be done before putting the paper together. Photographer should also gather photos at this stage.  Set Deadlines and hold each other responsible! 

4.         Get Design ideas Ð Look at some online newspapers to get ideas of how you can make your pages look great.

6. Peer Review  - Read each otherÕs articles to revise and edit them. (Make sure to use the rubric!)

7. Put it all together Ð Import the articles and pictures into the web page.  Create ads or other things to make it real.
